Here is a story for you.
In my class of second graders I have one Buddhist boy, who is a recent immigrant from China. He is a very gifted child. He is one of my top students. He has mastered English in just a few years. He sits next to a little girl I will call Jane. One day in class I hear Jane say "Teacher, teacher, Greg (not his real name) doesn't think there is a God, MAKE HIM say there is a God"
I told Jane I couldn't possibly make Greg say there was a God. I told them that God is personal, and part of our family culture, and that we can't discuss it at school. Then Jane says "Well YOU believe in God...don't you?" I answered that like I answer questions about Santa and the Easter Bunny (and I have gotten a few Santa questions)- "What I think doesn't matter- you need to talk to your PARENTS about this- but please, lets not talk about it at school." And they have quit. And the Buddhist and the Christian play and learn together under the watchful eye of an agnostic. And all is peace.
