"What I think doesn't matter- you need to talk to your PARENTS about this- but please, lets not talk about it at school."

Super response. In a diverse group of students, it is the only educated response (I say "diverse" because I suppose in say a private Catholic School, your job description would include the teaching of a particular religion). But how many teachers in a secular public school would make a non intrusive response which honors the beliefs of all students equally? I would bet, very few. In all of SI, I have only met a handful who would be impartial. Bravo.

I don't see any reason to be so self congratulatory, since it seems obvious to me that you are merely teaching relativism to the kids. Imposition of your world view on little kids is hardly admirable, although I'm sure you mean well.

"I told them that God is personal, and part of our family culture, and that we can't discuss it at school."

You Just made three truth claims about God to that child. Your pretended neutrality is just that. There ought to be a Law!
