what if you were chinese, wouldn't you assume that house 1 is on the right? ... looks like you have to tentatively try both, maybe ...

Marcos,

Here is the original solution:

Nationality: | Norwegian | Ukranian | English | Spanish | Japanese
Color: | Yellow | Blue | Red | Ivory | Green
Drink: | Water | Tea | Milk | OJ | Coffee
Food: | Hamburger | Spam | Pizza | Subs | KFC
Pet: | Fox | Horse | Snails | Dog | Zebra

Using your "Chinese" method would yield the following:

Nationality: | Spanish | Japanese | English | Ukranian | Norwegian
Color: | Ivory | Green | Red | Blue | Yellow
Drink: | OJ | Coffee | Milk | Tea | Water
Food: | Subs | KFC | Pizza | Spam | Hamburger
Pet: | Dog | Zebra | Snails | Horse | Fox

Note that they are very similar and involve the exact same logic.

BTW, I had no clue about the Einstein relationship. Someone once gave this to me and I cut and pasted it here. Thanks for the heads up.

Now... without looking it up...

When the Eiffel Tower was built it became the tallest man-made structure in the world. What structure did it replace?

- Jeff

"it is no longer necessary to know anything, or to be able to figure things out, you just need to know how to look stuff up -g-"

Dear marcos,

It seems that you are aware that your comment is very close to a quotation attributed to Einstein himself. He was reputed to not know how many feet were in a mile; he had no use for the information, he allegedly said, as he could always look it up.
