When she was a student at UCB she was the first woman to become the editor of the good Rusty Pelican , which was the rival to the Harvard Lampoon back in those days. She was the first woman editor in 100yrs, and her rare wit and humor and incomparable humorous sketches always challenged the students, and were cherished all over the campus .... she was a truely bright & unique personality. She went off to get her Masters at Columbia and returned to teach at the highschool level for over 30 years...even though she could just as easily have chosen to teach on the University level... (she wanted to catch them early before too much havoc was reeked upon them and they remained "open" to ideas ) She took many sabaticals , and was in love with the English and the Irsih , where she was very much at home . Countless former pupils and and Professors that were her students and contemporaries from before , came to her funeral to say goodbye to someone who always tried to teach a more discerning eye, with a twinkle in her eye an appreciation of nature and the imagination and stretching of one's skill and ability. She touched the lives of many...and lived beautifully with reason , humor and dignity and awareness. She died bravely from breast cancer in the same way in her home . A deeply moving religious experience for her perhaps was the many times I accompanied her when I was young along the beaches of the russian river.... looking for shells and interesting pebbles. I learned more about God and life , appreciation of beauty and what it is to be a complete human being , with grace wit and humor...than any other. My Aunt Marge also adopted one of her students , who's father was an alcoholic demon...and Joan went on to graduate with top honors from Cal Business school , with Marge's help , where she might have collasped under the weight of that family situation. She is an extremely successful person and business woman now ... She was a very great teacher of mine ...one of the more special people in my life and many others too. The kind of people that truely hold much of the fabric together by their sensibilty, reason , trained eye, wit , humor, feelings, thoughtfulness and uniqueness ...and was always growing and caring more. She was truely a beautiful woman...and great human being.
