Welcome to THE ISLAND!

The Owner of this delightful piece of private property has graciously consented to sharing it free of charge with any and all. However the Owner has young children, so is not prepared to tolerate behaviour that role models hurtful words or actions. The Owner told me that people may come and go to the island as it most pleases them, and that they may discuss or do anything they wish to discuss or do. The Owner is not concerned with their politics, religion, or societal issues. "The Island," said the Owner to me--only a few hours after I had been forced to tack my small sailboat to the shore, "is large enough for many points of view. If the truth be known--it is as large as the whole universe."

I do not know what the Owner meant, but those were the words that were spoken.

"I am not an elitist," the Owner said to me as we walked along the unique beach, where the white sand gradually turned to an ebony black. "My island is open for all to enjoy. It is a warm and inviting place. I love the solitude and the quiet here. The peace of the tide endlessly bringing in the sea is something which I prize highly. To me it is like a dozen violinists drawing the bow to some universal time."

The Owner had swept a hand across the seascape as these words were being whispered, in that odd singsong I had come to know. "But I also treasure the company of others. I love to share their wisdom--and to delight in their experiences."

The Owner stopped and took my hand. "I am looking forward to sharing this wonderful place with humanity. Do you have any questions, Solon?"

I had been waiting...

"What are the RULES?" I blurted out in unseemly haste. I don't know why, but suddenly I felt strange and otherworldly. A mist had drifted in from the sea, and it limned the offshore palms with a distinct grey, seeming to leave the huge fronds clear and untouched.

The Owner looked at me for a long minute with a quizzical expression. A light breeze moved back toward the shore, and cuddled the mist in mysterious eddies along the shore.

I felt like a peach being delicately peeled, as I breathlessly endured the owner's steadfast gaze. A sand crab scuttled past my feet--hurrying to a place I could not follow. The tide measured what seemed an endless time, and it droned and droned with an unceasing cadence.

"There are no rules," said the Owner finally, in a soft voice--and turned down the path.

"Wait!" I shouted, startled by my own panic. "No RULES? But how can anyone know when they are doing wrong?" I felt a tingly sensation in my chest as the owner turned softly toward my voice. I knew that my mind had been dragged across an invisible line, and I suppose that a part of me sensed that my heart was about to follow. The owner smiled slowly and raised a questioning brow. "You know when you are being hurt, don't you?"

"Yes, I sputtered, but, but--"

The Owner raised a hand. "Because of my two beautiful children, I monitor all behaviour on my island. There are no rules; but there IS a rowboat." He pointed to a small dock behind me.

When I turned around the Owner was gone.
