Tuesday, May 29, 2001 Over 80% Want To Use NTT DoCoMo 3G Cell Phone Service: Poll TOKYO (Nikkei)--About 83% of people are interested in subscribing to the third-generation (3G) mobile phone service of NTT DoCoMo Inc. (9437), which starts trial operations at the end of this month, a survey has found. But 76% of those interested in the FOMA service said they will use it only if phone charges remain unchanged, while about 8% intend to subscribe even if charges are raised. Among subscribers to existing mobile phone services, 98% of those using NTT DoCoMo's immensely popular i-mode service are eager to use FOMA. Nearly 80% of people subscribing to services offered by the KDDI (9433) and J-Phone groups also want to use it. Despite the strong interest in FOMA, some 49% of the respondents knew nothing about it until asked by the survey, while only 8% were familiar with the new service. Asked to mention specific 3G services they are willing to pay for, such as super-fast data transmission and access to video or CD-quality audio directly from the Internet, about 40% referred to "location services" that help users find where they are by means of cell phone-emitted radio waves. Among specific location services, about 49% want information on traffic accidents, 38% on restaurants and 33% about hobbies. Services in strong demand also include "video phone," mentioned by some 32%, and "music," "video" and "games," each drawing interest from more than 20%. Mitsubishi Research Institute Inc. and NTT-X Inc. conducted the survey of 7,736 people between Jan. 18 and Feb. 2. It was made through their "goo research" system, which collects replies to online questionnaires from voluntary monitors. Their surveys tend to show attitudes among people who are more strongly oriented toward high technology than conventional polls. Respondents average 3.7 years of experience using cell phones or PHS and spend 771 yen a month on content obtained via mobile phone services, indicating they are more familiar with mobile phone services than ordinary consumers. (The Nikkei Industrial Daily Tuesday edition) Tuesday, May 29, 2001 DoCoMo Begins 3G Cell Phone Service Wednesday TOKYO (Nikkei)--NTT DoCoMo Inc. (9437) will on Wednesday begin the world's first next-generation cell phone service in Tokyo, Kawasaki and Yokohama, offering transmission speeds of up to 40 times faster than existing services. Japan's leading cell phone operator expects about 150,000 subscribers in the first year, and plans to begin nationwide service in three years. About 4,500 monitors will test the FOMA service in the first four months. The monitors will be given handsets with a videophone function in June, later than planned due to a software glitch. The full services, including video service, will also start by the end of the year. The FOMA service, which enables data transmission at speeds of up to 384 kilobits per second, will easily support video and music distribution, the company said. However, FOMA's global roaming service, one of its key features, will be delayed mainly because cell phone companies in Europe have postponed similar services due to high investment costs.
