John - I think they are just further lowering the baseline to appear even more aggressive on price. Savvy shoppers will still add up the cost of the configuration they like, but DELL can offer a "standard configuration" which has no frills and build from there.

I continue to see some pretty amazing prices all around - I suspect the next 6 months will be a fierce price competition.

re Itanium: There was an article out over the weekend stating that this new chip handles data at 1/2 the speed of the x86 (32bit). I don't know where they're coming up with that since speed is a variable of several things, one item being the total amount of data that can be processed within a certain timeframe

The Itanium handles nearly two times the amount of data within the same time as does 32bit systems making it ideal for higher processing functions

Of course, individuals read that "1/2 speed" comment and generally come to inaccurate conclusions regarding overall performance
