Former CEO of Lernout & Hauspie Offers to Waive Extradition to Belgium Over Fraud Charges
DENISE LAVOIE
Associated Press Writer
BOSTON (AP) -- The former chief executive of troubled high-tech firm Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products NV said Tuesday he would waive extradition to Belgium to face fraud charges if he is released from jail for 10 days and allowed to get his affairs in order in the United States.

Gaston Bastiaens, 54, was arrested Saturday at his home in Winchester on a Belgian warrant accusing him of fraud, stock market manipulation and insider trading. He was held over the weekend in a jail in Braintree.

Once Europe's biggest maker of speech recognition and translation software, L&H's market capitalization collapsed after it was forced to admit to accounting errors and irregularities.

At a hearing in federal court on Tuesday, federal prosecutors asked that Bastiaens be held without bail pending a hearing on his extradition, which could take up to 75 days.

I haven't been to a JBX "restaurant", but know that the quality of product at the market leader MacDonalds is poor. So almost anyone can do better. Burger King do somewhat for a start. But MacDonalds have got name recognition and sell on that basis particularly outside the English speaking countries as "American Food". It's amazing how many MacDonalds there are in a place like Milano. They just opened a branch in Beit Shemesh, Israel for instance where there are no other chain fast food stores and only one restaurant with waiter service (there is falafel and pizza etc.) On the other hand the one a couple of blocks from me here in Canberra, Australia closed down. It was right next to KFC which is still doing business. They do still have one branch in the City center here.
