That is fine, but I can envision a situation where the question is so pointed that to get one's back up amounts to a confession. Additionally, even if you are not saving someone else's secret, you have a right to defend yourself against mere invasion of privacy......

"inappropriately prying... and why can't I say to such a person that this information is private and personal.

Here's an example of why not. Say someone in your community came up to you and said "I hear that your daughter has been out of town for a while. I heard she was pregnant. Is that true?" I say that the appropriate answer to that question is "no" whether it's true or not. If you say it's none of his business, he'll assume the worst.
