But how do you know what is destructive? Maybe I tell your wife you are cheating on her. But you have aids and I save her from getting it. Was it gossip or truth? Good or bad? Maybe my motive is tinged. Maybe I feel really bad for your wife, and want to help, yet I am also secretly pleased that you cheated on her because my husband left me for a younger woman, a la schadenfreude.

Do your "lectures" help you with everything? Are you on another ego trip- like the one you were on with Karen when you told her there weren't moral ambiguities? Who can know?

Maybe I give the information about the drug abuse to my cousin because I think they can help. Maybe it's also something interesting to talk about. Motives are rarely pure. BArring yours, of course. I am sure you know exactly what your motives are, if you say you do. But for the rest of the human species things are rarely unalloyed.

My Bible says this about Gossip as an added commentary to 2 Thessalonians 3:11,12

Gossip is tantalizing. It is exciting to hear, and it makes us feel like insiders. But instead of building up, gossip tears down. If you often find your nose in other people's business, you may be underemployed. Look for a task to do for Christ or your family and get to work.

I hope that agrees with what you are saying.
