If you tell my wife I am cheating on her and your motive is purely to help her get through a difficult situation, then it is not gossip. There is no way I can know 100% what your motive is, nor whether you are being truthful. I do not even want to go into a discussion about "judging" peoples motives. I know it is impossible. I even question my own motives sometimes. That doesn't change the meaning of gossip. Gossip is the spreading of information about a person in an idle way or a deliberately destructive way. Gossip itself is bad, it may or may not result in harm to the person you gossip about. "Do your "lectures" help you with everything?" silly, why are you needling me? If you give a literature lecture have your students become masters of everything? "Are you on another ego trip- like the one you were on with Karen when you told her there weren't moral ambiguities?" more finger pointing and name calling. C'mon X. I told Karen that I don't believe there are moral ambiguities. Who can know? well if you believe that then you have no reason to call it an ego trip since the possibility that I am correct exists. I also told Karen that I struggle to determine a moral course on a daily basis. Just because I am not all knowing about what would be the morally right thing to do in every situation does not mean that there isn't one. I am not sure how admitting that one has to struggle through life on a daily basis is an ego trip. I would question a person who claimed not to. If I found a such a person exists and that they were authentic, I might even become a follower. I don't expect that to happen.
