McKinley by year end 2001? I don't think so. Point me to a URL where even Intel is that optimistic. They're just barely getting started with Itanium, and the availability of native software is a big issue.

I wouldn't get too excited about the "operating system support" Microsoft is likely to provide. My impression is that they'll be starting to de-emphasize the OS business soon in favor of selling game machines. Unless the Appeals Court affirms -- then maybe one of the Baby-Bills would get serious about operating systems other than desktops. BTW, given the pricing they've applied to even their "Advanced Server" version of Windows 2000 (upwards of $3K, I believe), how much do you think they'll want for the Itanium version of Windows? Maybe $1K/month? They're pretty proud of it, you know.

Or perhaps by "operating system support" you meant Linux?

Power4, and IBM in general, are competition, but that's nothing new. You and others have been telling us for years that IBM (SGI, DEC, HP, CPQ, DELL ... take your pick) would run Sun out of business. It hasn't happened. I get the impression that IBM in particular wishes the Unix market would just go away so they could get on with selling mainframes.

JMHO.

I think you are yet another victim of Sun-stroke.

Now you are talking. Anyone who is invested in this company is, indeed, SUNWrecked. My deepest sympathy. ;)

Write back at the end of the year and we'll see if it's out yet...
