ST,

Funny you should mention that. I was just reading the Itanium specs last night and could not find a single reference to RDRAM. SDRAM on the other hand seems to be fully supported. One would think that RDRAM would be the ideal thing for Itanium, if it worked as advertised.

This has been addressed several times over the last couple of years on the thread. To summarize, the Itanium was initiated long before Intel selected RDRAM (in fact, the San Jose Mercury had a great article this past weekend on the timeline of the Itanium beginning in 1991, I believe). By the time RDRAM showed up, the Itanium (Merced) was behind schedule (and it was pretty obvious that McKinley was going to be the "real" first version of the product). Rather than delay the schedule even further by changing over to RDRAM (which, in hindsight, may have had no effect on the schedule at all), they stayed with SDRAM.

The fact that McKinley is moving to RDRAM should tell you more.
