ST:
mentioned that just yesterday they had a cancelation for 300mm orders

I would have to believe that SDRAM/DDR type fab equipment would be very sensitive to cancellations. Not much profits to be had in commodity SDRAM at this time frame.

I think this is important to Rambus because ultimately their $ is going to come from new goods

RMBS has been always tied to Intels hip. IMO the $7.5 B in Intel cap. ex. this year is a decent piece of orders for most equipment companies. The rest of PC industry will follow Intel's lead if they are successful in P4/Tutulin retooling efforts as a means of breaking out of PC slowdown/AMD threat. We have not publically seen cracks in Intel's strategy of fast and cheap P4 rollout assuming that RDRAM market share and commodity pricing will develop fairly quickly upon acceptance of P4.
If I read Intel correctly with a P4 1.4 GHz CPU with no RDRAM available at $230, I feel that Intel will have faster and only P4's at this price range for the business computer market for many months into the future. Do you think people will buy 2GHz by year end and 3+ GHz in 2002 or does Intel have very tough road ahead.
