"I wonder if Mohammed knew about great circle routes, though." The directive for prayer is the shortest route as the crow flies. So from here, Colorado, that is North East. Most people assume it is just East because they wouldn't think of traveling North East to get to Mecca.

But the shortest distance would actually be through the earth. If you where at the opposite side I suppose you could just face straight down. I don't think that is what Islam calls for though..
