It is such an immense relief to communicate with someone who understands what I am complaining about.

As I said, I guess the power of taxation stands behind my pension fund.

But it is interesting to contemplate that when I first began contributing (obligatorily) the fund was governed by people who had survived the Depression, or whose parents had. So they put everything in AAA bonds. Now I have lived long enough so that the governors are from the sixties and seventies, and espouse mindless buy and hold of the most "advanced" stocks.

Happily, in the interval, I married a wife whom I kept largely in equities and now have totally into inflation-adjusted bonds. (And I have my own stocks in energy)

So I am OK.

At least I am not one of those World War I soldiers in France being sent into an impossible assault by some idiotic general.

Some of these SI threads are islands of sanity in an ocean of idiocy.
