Zeev:

You seem to think that current Palestinian situation was caused in no case by any Israeli government actions over the last 50 years. You feel it primarily was external forces, the French, UK, Arabs neighbors, and the Soviets. You might as well add the US to the list at this rate.

Totally unrelated I kept trying to remember details about the attack of the USS Liberty during the 67 war after the China spy plane incident occurred. But since you bring up the 67 war, I decided to conduct that web search. I only reference I found off the net was from a fairly right wing org. called free republic.

freerepublic.com

"Liberty was shattered but defiant, her flag still flying. Israeli attacks killed 34 U.S. seamen and wounded 171 out of a crew of 297, the worst loss of U.S. naval personnel from hostile action since World War II. "

At the time of this incident, the Vietnam War and cold war balance of power issues totally superceded any serious public policy discussion of this incident in any manner. Since the end of the Vietnam War and post Watergate revelations, the US government has been shown not to be the unilateral superpower either military or moral that some would like us to be. This has been accentuated dramatically since the Beriut marine base incident about 10 years ago, the US has much less eager to be seen as pro Israeli or anti Arab or even wanting to get involved beyond shuttle diplomacy or the limited amount of foreign aid we provide to the middle east relative to the size of our economy.

As a outsider with nothing at stake, I would not try to over-moralizing who is right or wrong in this situation, I have seen nothing morally palatible from the Palestinian side that makes me feel their methods they are using to seek a homeland is justifiable in any manner. However, it is hard to understand how continued expansion of Israeli settlements are going to lead to a favorable outcome to the difficult problems at hand.
