But he has something most of them lack: he is able to play the rube, to sublimate his ego, to keep a fairly neutral emotional stance.

I'm fond of Columbo, too. I learned a lot from him, things that have been both useful and character building. I haven't watched him in a long time because I've seen all the episodes too many times, but someday I will be able to watch them again.
