I checked since writing and Dempster turned out OK. Clearly he made far less mistakes than almost any other investor. Berkshire Hathaway was a bit of good luck he almost sold it apparently according to Loewenstein quoting Munger. Again I don't what the price would have been. You could be right that there haven't been any actual losses I don't have detailed numbers on all the deals. Does anyone? I don't think so?

USG was delisted from the SP400 index. But seems the price bounced a little off the bottom yesterday.

OK, here's a challenge. Document one position that we know Buffett bought any time in his career that suffered any signficant loss of principal. Just one. I can't think of one, and I think I have done more than the average bear's homework on his whole career.

There are several more mentioned in the Loewenstein book. Vornado is one I can remember. But it isn't really so hard. Just look at the Annual Report. You'll find an item of "Realized Losses" under equity securities.

Also for example in the 2000 Annual Report Buffett says he paid too much for Dexter Shoe. He says they are writing off all the goodwill they acquired....
