I don't see why we should trust the government to have the power of life or death over someone when we don't even trust them to fill potholes.

One example I can think of is the recent case in Boston where FBI agents let a guy languish in prison for 30 years even though they knew he was innocent. Good thing that wasn't a death penalty case.
