Press Release

Taiwan Manufacturers Introduce 4-Layer
Motherboards Supporting Pentium 4 with RDRAM

Low Cost 4-Layer RDRAM Motherboards On Display at Computex

TAIPEI, Taiwan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 6, 2001--Rambus Inc. (Nasdaq:RMBS -
news), the leading provider of high bandwidth chip-connection technologies, ASUSTek
Computer, Gigabyte Technology and Micro-Star International (MSI) today announced a
milestone in the RDRAM® cost reduction program with the introduction of 4-layer
Pentium®4 motherboards supporting two RDRAM Channels. These new 4-layer RDRAM
motherboards are cost competitive compared to SDRAM motherboards and are on display
this week during Computex in Taiwan.

``With its high-bandwidth and scalability, RDRAM sets a new benchmark in performance
and is a highly attractive memory architecture,'' states Jonathan Tsang, Vice-President,
ASUSTeK Computer, Inc. ``In addition to the P4T and P4T-M in mass production today,
ASUS is very proud to launch new 4-layer Pentium 4 motherboards based on advanced
RDRAM technology, delivering competitive cost vs. SDRAM boards for the mainstream
desktop PC market.''

``MSI 850 Pro motherboards fully utilize the high bandwidth Rambus RDRAMs provide to
satisfy the demanding memory needs of Desktop PCs,'' said Jeans Huang, Vice President of
Micro-star Int'l Co., Ltd. ``To meet cost/performance criteria of mainstream market, we're
launching the new 4-layer products, based on Intel 850 chipset and featured RDRAM
memory, in Computex Taipei.''

Today, there are over 300 RDRAM-based systems available including desktop PCs,
workstations, consumer platforms as well as high performance, single and dual processor
motherboards. RDRAM devices with data rate transfers of up to 800MHz enable a single
Rambus Channel to achieve bandwidth of up to 1.6 gigabytes per second. Rambus
technology allows architects the flexibility to incorporate multiple channels to scale memory
capacity and bandwidth to meet system requirements. Intel 840 and Intel 850 chipset-based
desktops and PC workstations and Sony's PlayStation®2 utilize two Rambus Channels for a
total of 3.2 gigabytes per second of memory bandwidth.

About Rambus Inc.

I post this before the weekend, sorry if you have read it.

1) Rambus & DDR, warming up before the battle

The Taipei COMPUTEX show starts next week, but the battle between RDRAM &
DDR has already started this week. Asus, Giga & MicroStar will show off new 4 layer
P4 main board. (All P4/RDRAM MB are 6 layer now, 4 layer MB saves the
manufactures $8 to $10.) ....... Most of the buyers think the DDR performance gain
over SDRAM not justify the higher cost, that further deemed the hope of team DDR.
....... But remain cautious, DDR enabled Brookdale chipset may help boost DDR
demand later.

2) P4 selling like hot cake, DDR sitting on the cold bench

Intel has lowered their 1.3GHz P4 another $20 quietly to $170, about 10%. Seeing the
market share of P4 rising in the second half of this year, the manufactures are gearing
up to produce Intel 845 chipset main board and not to bet on the DDR chipset by
VIA, SiS or ALi. .......... Intel estimate the P4 CPU will makeup 1/3 of its production
by Q4, so the MB manufactures are getting ready or it. The 850/RDRAM MB will be
the main focus for the MB makers, they also hope to gear up for the MB using the 845
chipset. So far no MB maker have received any DDR chipset sample from VIA, SiS
and Ali and expressed the low interest of such chipset.

3) Winbond Join the RDRAM team

Seeing Intel wining the holy war of new generation processor, Winbond decided to join
Samsung, Toshiba and Elpida (team RDRAM) against Micron, Nanya and LiJin (I
don't know its English name), so called the team DDR. Winbond have sent a high rank
officer to the US to meet with Rambus regarding the license issue and to meet with Intel
and some manufactures express the will to produce RDRAM for them. In the second
half of the year, Winbond will ship RDRAM to the system manufactures and to provide
RDRAM for Toshiba as well. ........

4) Output of AMD MB getting lower

According to some MB makers, the AMD platform MB output is significantly lower in
this quarter. There is a problem with AMD's 133MHz external bus, and the horrible
pricing due to excessive inventory of AMD CPU also caused the makers to put on
hold the production to support AMD CPU. ....... According to some MB makers,
besides the AMD 133MHz external bus problem, there's problem to pair AMD CPU
with VIA KT-133 chipset as well. Now the MB maker, the chipset maker and AMD
are all pointing finger at each other. .......There are some "can't boot up" and some
"system running unstable" problem,(waoooo and hi ha!, this is my own remark :p)
AMD says the problems can be solved if the MB maker would design LCL (I don't
know what this is) into the board but the makers think it's the fault of both the chipset
and the processor.........

carl:

it seems granularity is a big issue comparing prices of registered DDR and RDRAM.
