Having worked with Servers
The price of a server within a few hundred $ is not very important. It's the data on them that is of great value. No major player is going to risk his neck with a million dollars worth of data to save a few bucks. The consumer market is an easy penetration because PCs are sold and bought by people who don't know $hit, just $.

<How can you blame AMD management for lack of a top tier server win, ....>

This is ridiculous. Who else do you hold accountable? Why do yopu think AMD developed these products?

<...for example? Exactly what would you have done differently? >

Lots of things and I have posted about these many times over the last couple of years.

<Why don't you blame Compaq and IBM, instead of Jerry?>

The fundamental tenet of any supplier is "customer is always right". It is pretty funny even to imagine that Compaq and IBM should be blamed for AMD not able to sell its products.

<Intel has new server products every six months. Whoever picks Athlon MP first will certainly not get favorable pricing or (less important) allocation from Intel, so a stalemate will continue until enough middle tier players start taking market share away from the big guys. That's a fact of life and will take time to change.>

So why do you think Jerry kept talking about imminent corporate design wins for almost a couple of years now?

Quite amused by the post.....

Re: blame AMD management for lack of a top tier server win, for example?

There are big problems in the server market right now, everybody's desperate, the few buyers out there have little budget, new and nearly new inventory is being dumped left and right. There probably isn't a lot of experimentation in server purchases, right now.

AMD is going to have to spend a quarter or two having white box product in the field, proving itself and letting people get comfortable with the notion of AMD workstations and servers.

So far, just great - they're out there at last, and can finally start to establish a track record.

Dan
