<<<The No. 1 question that needs to be asked is how many lives are saved every year on the nation's roads by having 18-year-olds NOT drink.>>>

A tired argument. How many MORE lives will we save by raising the drinking age to 24?

Personally, I would be happy to have the age of majority rise to 30. But there should be some consistency. It is absurd to allow 18 year olds to vote, serve in the armed forces, make contracts, marry without parental consent, and so forth, and to forbid them a beer. Either treat them as children on a wide array of issues, or concede they are adults......

I have a better way to handle this problem involving the daughters Bush: How about the girls realize that they will be responsible for their actions?

That's a novel concept this day and age, isn't it?

Exactly right. They should be held responsible for it.

And while we're at it, let's relay that message to all of society.

Have a good one.

Interesting how you don't address Al Gore Jr's situation....only the Bush daughters. One might think you have blinders on.

Good post, flap. It would be nice if there were a simple solution to the problem. All of the arguments presented for both lowering and raising the drinking age have sense behind them. Raising it would probably decrease drinking somewhat- -at the cost of increasing the mini-prohibition that already exists. Lowering it can cost lives. Maybe. Maybe sub-21s are already getting all the booze they want.

I understand that Barbara Bush, George I's wife, has read them the riot act. Hopefully it will make an impression. They are engaging in behavior that can have very serious consequences, the least of which are legal problems.
