RESEARCH ALERT-Goldman cuts AK Steel estimates

NEW YORK, June 7 (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs lowered its 2001 and 2002 earnings estimates for AK Steel Holding Corp. (NYSE:AKS - news) on Thursday citing lower demand from auto production. In a research note, Goldman said it reduced the 2001 estimate to 4 cents per share from 50 cents and the 2002 estimate to $1.24 from $1.84. ``Lower auto production, price discounting in cold-rolled sheet and lower-than-expected cost benefits from slab purchases have caused us to reduce our earnings estimates,'' said the note. It said it maintained its market outperform rating for Middletown, Ohio-based AK Steel, which provides much of its steel output to the auto industry. The stock was off 55 cents to $13.95 in early trade.
