Kap, Re: There was a decision to switch gears and go after the notebook space several months after Mustang taped-out.

So Palomino and Mustang were much more different than AMD suggested? If there was only the additional 2nd level cache (1 or 2 MB for Mustang), it shouldn't be too hard to cut it to 512kb or 256kb (very similar to Thunderbird -> Spitfire).

BTW, why was Mustang cancelled in the first place when it already taped-out in the 2nd half of 2000? Because AMD760MP was late? And why would AMD wait several months before deciding to switch to a mobile solution? It's really hard to understand the "logic" behind all these delays. I sincerely hope we don't have a similar story with the Hammer series.

Andreas

The decision to switch was in my view 100% brilliant.
Kap,
Again, thanks for the insight. Never got the impression that everything in AMD's management (including marketing) was as bad as suggested on this thread lately. On the contrary... Given posters like NG as reliable source...
Actually, what I want to say: keep on posting.
Regards,
S

<There was a decision to switch gears and go after the notebook space several months after Mustang taped-out. From that point on, the Palomino slip was no more than a month. The decision to switch was in my view 100% brilliant. However, one could argue that AMD should have planned for mobile Palomino to be the first part from the start.>

If in fact AMD thought of mobile segment only after P4 showed up, AMD management would be dumber than I can imagine. But, I do not believe that is the case, there were Athlon laptops on the roadmap for 2000 as far back as H2 1999. Here is an old roadmap from Anand.
