Apple was never price competitive before. They are now. And there are significant things that Apple has innovated that will help. Mac OS X, Airport networking, and DVD writing at reasonable speed and cost are three prime very current examples. These are all killer innovations. And despite what you say about USB, the Mac was the first to deploy it in a way that worked well. Apple was so bold as to require it to work as there were no serial ports along side it. It took the PC years to get this right. And the plug and play aspect of it is dubious at best. Same can be said about Firewire.
