Since the phrase is "pull yourself up by your own bootstraps", it is the wrong image

No. It is the correct image. The figurative meaning is as Karen stated. It is used as a synonym for self help and for using your own resources. The focus is not on any literal imagery of lifting the whole person. The focus is on using resources that are yours and yours alone. When one is bogged in mud, one must sometimes reach down both hands, and lift one foot at a time out of the mire, until one has escaped the quagmire.

Karen used the phrase correctly, and the challenge to her was, pardon me--BOOTLESS.
