When one is bogged in mud, one must sometimes reach down both hands, and lift one foot at a time out of the mire

They're not making bootstraps like they used to. I don't have any that are big enough to fit even one finger from each hand.

Whenever I've had a boot stuck in the mud, I always ended up stepping out of it, then bending over and wrenching the empty boot loose. I guess that doesn't count. <g>

Actually, when I think of bootstrap, I always think not of boots but of computers.

Kids, don't try this at home.

Sorry, but you're wrong, as usual.

Stand on one foot
Reach down and grasp bootstaps firmly
Now pull with all your might

Pulling one foot at a time only works if you have a place to put that foot afterwards, but then your not pulling yourself up by your bootstrap anymore you're leveraging one foot against the other. It doesn't work any better as a metaphor than it does in real life.

Well, you give a plausible account, and the matter is small, so I will concede.......

It appears that we had an inadequate sense of the origin. According to a site I found, which for some reason is not copying, the bootstrap was useful in pulling the boot up the leg, and also might help with climbing a ladder. Sorry about the confusion.
