<<Highest I paid was $1.99 for high test. >>

I haven't heard the term "high-test" since I was a kid in the late 60's. I have vague memories of Mom pulling the Vista Cruiser into the local Mom&Pop Texaco garage and asking Hank to "fill it up with high test". Somehow she was convinced that our car had to have Texaco and it had to be "high-test". Sunoco, Mobil and Gulf would somehow damage the engine.

Why did they call it "High-test" anyway? It sounds like an experimental rocket fuel.
