Re: "The Civil War was fought more over the issue of "State's Rights" than slavery."

Revisionistic hogwash. "States' rights" is a euphemistic justification for an economic system that couldn't function without the "free labor" of 4 million African-Americans in 1860. John Brown didn't lead the raid on Harper's Ferry to build a stronger federal government and take away power from the states. "Uncle Tom's Cabin" wasn't written to show the horrors of states' rights. If the Civil War were about states' rights and not about the obscenity of slavery, then England would have recognized the Confederacy early on. Factors other than slavery, of course, also contributed to the firing on Fort Sumter, but make no mistake about it. The issue of slavery was the No. 1 factor.

Or to put it another way, John Brown had it right.

Re: "Welfare is being phased out." Certain aspects of it are undergoing radical change. It will never be phased out. The changes, by the way, are affecting the single mom with three kids. As far as "corporate welfare" ... hell, with GWB in office, those boys are in fat city.
