Those of us here old enough to remember the Vietnam war had much the same debate. For a long time the majority supported the war. "The people" as Karen would say. I didn't. I didn't, of course, blow up any federal buildings. But I did take part in the human chain around the Pentagon, which disrupted the government and was at least technically illegal; others, but not I, engaged in acts of civil disobedience such as lying in front of troop trains and munitions trains; I did engage in a few illegal activities I won't get into here since I was subsequently pardoned by President Carter. But at the start, we were definitely a minority and not in line with the will of "the people." Eventually "the people" came around. But at first, it was lonely voices crying in the wilderness.

Sort of like I'm doing here and now. <g>

I can not support the blanket statement "fight the government when it is mostly doing the will of the majority and you're a terrorist.

I understand your wanting to retain an ability to put a brake on the people if the people really go off the deep end. But I think you are too hard on the people. "They" do seem really stupid sometimes. I agree that there is theoretically a point where the will of the people could be something unconscionable, but I don't see that happening. The people may have their faults, but I have faith that they would, when push comes to shove, recoil from doing anything really horrible.
