There are many who have died at the hand of Saddam the madman. The Kurds of the North and the Shiites of the South. There are hundreds of thousands of dead children under the age of eight from these same areas who are dead as a direct result of US sanctions imposed on Iraq. As early as 1992 at a press conference, Madeline Albright was asked specifically if she understood that the consequenses of US sanctions could directly result in the deaths of half a million small children. Her response, speaking for the US government at the time was, "We think it is worth it." At the time the Saddam regime was a small portion of the Iraq population existing in and around Bagdad. The outlying villages which populate the rest of Iraq represented opposition to the regime. Initiating the sanctions was planned to put the outlying regions under some stress. The stress caused to these outlying villages would result in a revolt against the regime. In fact, a couple of attempts were made early on by southern forces to run a coup on Saddam. There has never been a retraction of the Albright statement on the government possition. It is clear that the innocents have been successfully targeted by this strategy and have died by the hundreds of thousands. A couple of years ago when I would bring this up on line, I had to spend a week defending my self from all kinds of accusations. Now, however, even the popular press is covering this issue so there is plenty of articles out there to verify this problem.
