I will not indulge in the folly that slavery was not a preeminent issue, but it is deceptive not to note the importance of duty free ports in the South. Lincoln was not willing to go to war over slavery, and said so several times. But he was more than willing to go to war to protect the Northern mercantile interests.

Charles Adams has laid it out clearly in his excellent book For Good and Evil: The Impact of Taxes on the Course of Civilization. The chapter on the War Between the States is heavily footnoted and includes several contemporary articles.

By the way, secession as a valid option was taught at West Point up until the war.

This is pure, unadulterated Uncle Tom-ism:

By the way, I understand that there were benevolent masters, and paternalistic households.

I'm sure there were benevolent Nazis too! -- BAH!
