Even considering it an open question, the Confederacy was under no illusion that it could walk away. Instead,it was counting on British clothing interests to push the Queen's government into taking their side, a strategy that failed. Thus, responsibility for the consequences of its actions, and an estimate of the sufficiency of the cause, cannot be eluded. South Carolina bears especial responsibility for firing the first shot, and slavery is an abomination. This is, for me, an easy call.......

Under the original power of the states it was an open question as to whether a state could secede from the Union. It is something that may be tested again by Texas or Alaska later this century.
Why do you say this (about Texas or Alaska seceding)?
