I seem to recall that it was in fact a meeting between Walter and Gates that got this whole process started. I believe Gates told Walter that "...the future of telecommunications is IP." This was at one of those CEO boondoggles in Ireland way back when Crowe was running MFS. This led to the sale of MFS to Bernie Ebbers and $5B (gain from original investment of $500MM) returning to Peter Kiewit. This was the cash start of LVLT, so, I guess we can blame this wreckage on Gates if we like. I usually don't have too much trouble blaming Gates for stuff but this might be a bit of a reach. Everyone bought into the "waiving grains of bandwidth" story to some degree. And it will probably get there eventually; I just hope LVLT can pull through on their own.
