Alaska becoming a separate country is a bit far-fetched. What hasn't been discussed yet is the possibility of splitting one state into two or more. For instance, some are saying California ought to be divided into three states (north, central and south) because of the enormous population of the state and regional differences. Florida might be another candidate for splitting. There is a precedent for this, of course: West Virginia in 1863.
