The gas can be separated with the brine pumped back down. The estimated energy reserve was enough to serve the worlds present needs for 1000 years. So we are not running out of energy, just cheap oil which becomes a political/economical football. If the government had stepped in and placed all the required nuclear reactors in one area( such as Hanford) with North- South and East-West DC .Interties, electricity could be almost free. And we would not have the cities at risk by building reactors all over the country. Put them all in one of the mined -out tar pits in Alberta.(just joking) Politics prevents that from happening. Because each Senator, Representative, Governor, Mayor says "whats in it for me"?. " You will put all the local power producers and contractors out of work"."Where is the pork?" Another argument would be the vulnerability of a single source to attack or failure. However, recent events in Calif, plus other brownouts, show an increasing need for interties. So how about a Government sponsored Intertie program similar the Highway Program? If electric vehicles have a future, we need lots more electricity. But its going to get very interesting to have hydrogen fueled and battery powered vehicles on the freeways. The freeway gets jammed at night when its 110 degrees. All the lights boomboxes and A/C get shut off. You sit and watch the guy in front with a gas vehicle in a cool car watching the Lakers play on an in-dash TV. And wonder- about paying extra- to save on fuel cost. Cop to a car driver. "Did you see what happened" Driver: "Yup, I seen it. You see that scorched car up there ? Well, he just lightly bumped the guy in front of him- knocked the nozzle off the high pressure hydrogen tank and that car just took off like a rocket. 100 feet straight up at least. And about 500 yards off to the right in that cow pasture . But his ejector seat worked" Sig
