Solomon is simply hyping a stock they underwrote in the hopes of getting more CS business.

I was not too impressed by the Avici announcement because they are such a small player and I didn't understand the implications as you do. I think I get it in that their systems could completely replace the old leased phone systems that companies have used for years and still provide the same security??????

How do they go up against CSCO and the others? These guys are tiny and just like Microsoft did for desktop software, the big networkers can sell everyone a crappy system (by comparison) just based on their marketing, installed base, and political power.

Hi ahhaha,

A few clarifications if you don't mind. This is not my area of engineering and I have not had time to catch up on the details of the sector.

>>CSCO should be a major beneficiary of the "macro" forces
>>which will also benefit RSTN. Great. CSCO should garner
>>far more of the market. So what?
>>
>>My reason for interest in RSTN is G-MPLS and flexibility
>>to interoperate at best speed in the burgeoning GigE VPN
>>and ancillary spaces. There's also some other potential
>>opportunities. G MPLS is more than what it appears. The
>>key is in this excerpt from the Avici partnership:

Wasn't CSCO pushing their own version called Tag switching and if so doesn't inter-operability become an issue for competitors like RSTN? If CSCO Tag Switching dominates it is tough for competitors to get foothold.

You mentioned VPN over GigE. Does the new GigE standard address the issue of provisioning? Most customers using a VPN have specific quality of services issues. Provisioning the bandwidth so that the carrier get the most utilization out of the channel seems to be the concern for the carriers. You can set aside a dedicated gigE channel for the customer, but it is more cost effective if you can provision the channel so that it gets shared by multiple customers who may require different levels of service and have different peak demand schedules.
