WCOM splitting off LD was a very good move. LD is not going away and never will, this is also a huge cash cow for WCOM. They will absorb business from the smaller telcos that are falling by the wayside. This will be key in helping fund capital budget needs.

The new WCOM side will be the growth company. Their broadband infrastructure will be key to their growth, and the marriage with Digex is a perfect move. While many companies are already over built in this area the fact remains that this is what fuels our world. Any momentary slowdown will only be followed by rapid growth as the weak companies go away and businesses like WCOM capitalize on being one of the biggest. With the rate of change that growing technology can create already built out networks will all of a sudden find themselves in need of more space, I think WCOM knows this and is taking appropriate measures to keep up, if not be the leader.
