Over the short term, internet traffic may very well decline. Lots of high tech layoff victims are now surfing on the slow modem lines that they pay for rather than the fast T1 company lines. People in other sectors may very well think that, since the boom is over, all the reasons to hook up have gone away.

For the long term, well.... I've tied my career to the Internet, so I'm not exactly unbiased. But I'm pretty convinced that we're only just beginning to figure out how to exploit it. Cheap bandwidth, like cheap transistors, allows applications that are difficult or impossible to imagine without it.
