Who mentioned HDR? Chaz asked: Where and under what conditions has EDGE been tested in a real world situation? I replied "Same places as 1xEV". << FUT(friendly user testing) for quite a while now, in US and Japan. >> Please link us to an article about the FUT and then link me to a description of the devices employed in the FUT. Has 1xRTT voice been combined with data in this FUT? Is the MSM5500 sampling? Has, or is, FUT going on in the Redmond environs for AWS? Not everybody pulls their Nokia out immediately upon entering a brothel (that phrase certainly loses something in Cyberspace translation). BTW: My questions are not meant to be rhetorical, I simply don't have the answer to some of these questions. Bottom line is that from all the articles I have read, there is nothing I construe to be "real worldly" about the trialing that has been going on (for some time) with 1xEV-DV, although trialing seems to be proceeding right logically and nicely. As Jorma often points out, some companies release "promiseware" before others, and some race to establish first to market advantage, as Motorola did with GPRS. I am reminded of this when I look back at the MSM5100 "released" in February, 2000, sampling as of April and hopefully shipping in some volume October for handsets early in the coming year. I am not, BTW, questioning the reality of that time frame. Minister Yang (Qualcomm's "main man" in Korea) evidently seems to think that there can be some "commercially available" devices available by World Cup time next May. Now while you do not necessarily have to have "commercially available" devices for FUT, it is nice to have good prototypes available, and maybe there are some out there in "Friendly Users" hands. Will GSM-EDGE be (legitimately), "commercially available", before TIA/EIA/IS-856 1xEV-DO? I'm not sure. I suspect that 1xEV-DO might get to Asia slightly ahead of GSM-EDGE, but I also suspect that GSM-EDGE might get to the States somewhat ahead of 1xEV-DO. This is probably a Ben question, but do you have any visibility on whether or not 3GPP2 has proceeded with a cross modal specification for 1xEV-DO, and while you're at it, do you have any conjecture on the European visit (announcement) being bandied about. - Eric -
