That's true, like the old adage, you do what you have to do...

Another example is the death of someone near and dear to you. You somehow make it through with zombie like actions, and about a month later it hits you, that loved one is really gone.

I know there must be a name for that phenomenon, but I don't have a clue what it might be.

It's called being a parent! Have you forgotten that chapter already <g>

My eldest boy had an open fracture of his collar bone when he was 5, broke his nose when he was 8 and almost amputated his two of his fingers.....twice! Each time, his dad was on a trip.....each time I was calm and kept him as calm as possible. When we'd get home.....I'd throw up!
