Bush Stunned By Vast Size Of US Nuclear Weapons Arsenal
6-18-1

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush was stunned last month when told of the extent of the U.S. nuclear arsenal, Newsweek magazine reported in its June 25 edition, released on Sunday.

``I had no idea we had so many weapons,'' Bush was quoted as saying by an unidentified ``White House insider.''

``What do we need them for?'' the president was said to have asked at a briefing, according to the Newsweek report.

But that was not a dumb question, the magazine noted in detailing the vast U.S. nuclear arsenal, which includes 5,400 warheads on intercontinental ballistic missiles, 1,750 nuclear bombs and cruise missiles ready to be launched from B-2 and B-52 bombers, 1,670 ``tactical'' nuclear weapons and another 10,000 warheads in bunkers around the United States.

That potential for nuclear overkill may be reined in, however, as Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld prepares at the Pentagon to implement Bush's stated goal of streamlining and downsizing the arsenal.

Rumsfeld has brought back retired Gen. George (Lee) Butler and former Reagan administration national security guru Richard Perle to spearhead an effort to reduce the arsenal to safer, more manageable and more cost efficient levels, Newsweek said.

``I see no reason why we can't go well below 1,000'' warheads, Perle told the magazine. ``I want the lowest number possible under the tightest control possible.''

``The truth is we are never going to use them,'' Perle added. ''The Russians aren't going to use theirs either.''

Say what you want about ole' "W"... the man is bringing some common sense to the presidency, to policy, perhaps a little sanity. The man thinks above the belt, unlike the former deralict that occupied that office. That alone is a blessing. "W" may be remiss and unskilled and even uneducated in some areas where he needs to hone up... but just knowing there's someone with his finger on the nuclear trigger, and surrounded by staffers, who recognize the sheer madness of our present nuclear stockpile is a great feeling. I haven't seen common sense in the White House since Carter, and he was crucified for it. I don't think "W" will let himself be crucified for it, however. He'll fight back, bitch-slap ya' and tell ya' where to sit!

Re: "But tell me: If you don't like this thread, why do you hang around? All you get here are abuse and ridicule. From everybody, not just from me."

I got a personal message a couple weeks ago from someone (not from this thread) asking me the same. "Flapjack, why do you put up with all that abuse?" he asked. I replied that it's not really any fun just preaching to the choir, and only losers like to associate with fish of the same stripe ... whoops, sorry James. And, every once in a while I'll get a post (usually private) from someone saying they thought I had a good point about this or that.

I don't know. I guess my staying here is the same reason that some teachers go into special education ... they find it a challenge to teach the educable mentally retarded. I guess that's probably the most apt analogy.

You're probably right. I've probably run my course here. Might be time to move on. although the GWB thread isn't any better with people like Cyberkenny, the word-challenged Thomas Watson and Michael Cummings posting over there.
