it is very hard to say what is logical now.

IMHO, the proper response to the question would be that intel does not comment on business decisions of the clients.

His response did sound somewhat defensive.

The reason why "the logic" may not apply is because intel is conducting pricewar against amd. Intel also should not act against shareholders will and that is why intel management may decide to borrow against future.
