HDTV is not common in the US yet. Very little programming to date.

When we furnished our house last year we had to decide whether to go HDTV or not. We decided to wait, though we did pay up for the digital sets which aren't quite HD, but really shine with DirecTV, and I imagine would perform beautifully with digital cable also. They were less than half the cost of HD sets and the digital picture resolution smokes analog reception.
