How much are the classes and the pilot licensing costs? It varies a bit from place –to-place. Once you’re done with ground school, you’ll have to get some hours in a plane. You gotta pay for the plane (with fuel, of course) and instructor. Avgas is costly. I don’t know what we pay, but it’s up there. So that’ll affect the price. Many folks are using Cessna 152’s for trainers. That’s a dinky little plane, but it won’t take a ton of fuel and will give you a feel for what its like to fly. I figure you’ll pay something like $80-100 an hour to fly it. (I could be wrong. So check your local FBOs to get prices. Maybe the cost will be less-- or more. I'm just guessing here.) You’ll solo in about 10-20 hours and get certified in no fewer than 40 hours. Likely it’ll take you about 60 hours. So expect to pay something like $6000 for a basic pilot’s license (Visual Flight Rules only). I think you should then go right in to get an instrument rating. Treat it as if its a standard requirement. Then you can fly IFR. If I had more time I would love to give it a whirl. If you are like everyone else, you are fighting hard to postpone your death. You will never have enough time. You just gotta do it. You won’t regret it, unless you pull a dang JFK, Jr and do something stupid (then you’ll be dead, so I guess it wouldn’t much matter, now would it?). Flying ain’t very forgiving of idiots. But everyone else will have a ball.
