The traditional internet data usage probably won't grow too much. Those who need to be online are already online and are not spending much more time in front of the PCs. People who don't need internet probably won't sign up anyway. But the technology will keep moving and come up with new applications such as digital TV over DSL. It's like the asphalt highway seems never enough.

GBH: Nacchio and all the rest are just talking up their stocks...

While I tend to agree with you I also have to give Nacchio credit. During that period, roughly one year ago, when he was constantly butting heads with Crowe (of LVLT) he did recognize, and address, one fundamental weakness of his industry sector. Something his peers didn't seem to think necessary. That is, the need to have a cash cow continually dribbling monies into your coffers and to the bottom line. His purchase of US West, although roundly yuck, yucked, some time back is now proving to be a wise acquisition.

So like you I happen to like Q for that reason. They should survive this telecom sector evisceration.

John~

gbh:

I like AT&T, Q, Williams, and SBC. They all can prosper, and have done some interesting financial and/or technical things. The traffic is growing (Roth is a wonder as in ?) as it always was: sporadically, but LT 100% / year.

There is a definite CLEC squeeze underway, to try to kill them while there is some hope of doing so, before the Dems in Congress wake up and figure out the '96 act really has no teeth...and they decide to give the CLECs the fines the USG has been collecting all along....maybe. So they get fined, and they chalk it up to COGS...some teeth, eh?

Anyway, that is the issue as I see it, not the traffic. They have SOME excess capacity, not a lot. They will have to spend, if they do not want QOS to drop, by October IMO.

OTOH, they probably CAN afford to have the internet (not voice) QOS drop a bit...it is already flaky, no? In addition to the fines going to the injured parties, there needs to be a QOS minimum for the internet set by the FCC too...it is now as important, if not more so, than voice...
