hi rick

i am very familiar with the dialogs to which you refer, although i am always attempting to send mail when they appear for me. i try cancel, ok, i feed 'em a password, whatever it takes to get them off my screen. often the prob is alleviated by closing the browser and reopening it.

imo, this unexplained behavior is just another indication that netscape seems to deteriorate, or become corrupted, over time. i refer you to #reply-15984610 , in which i discuss rebuilding the netscape registry. this step, along with other remedies suggested in the link within the post ( #reply-15142758 ), will probably eliminate the email weirdness dialog.

i refer specifically to...

"Try the usual first aid. Close NetScape. Then use your file manager to delete NETSCAPE.HST and the CACHE directory (or all files therein)"

as a great place to start the netscape maintenance. then do the netscape registry rebuild...

"Rebuild the NetScape REGISTRY. Back up all USERS directories (folders). Close NetScape. Rename NSREG.DAT to NSREG.BAK in c:\windows, then restart NetScape. It will prompt for a new Profile. Give it the exact name of your old Profile and it should recognize it. Multiple Profiles can be restored the same way .Or create new Profiles"

remember to close netscape first, back up the user folder, and note the exact name of the old (existing) profile so that you can feed it right back to the wizard when it prompts for profile name.

there are other remedial steps as well in the link i've given you that can help. the ones outlined above are the cream of the crop, imo, and have given me the best results.

i wish you well.

:)

password entry dialog continued....

i visited netscape communicator newsgroups to see what they were saying, if anything, about this pesky little dialog. fwiw, i found this....

*******************************

"Q: Can I get rid of the 'password entry dialog box' that asks for my password every time i pull up the mail in NS 4.75?

A: Configure it this way...

The flag waving standalone mail utility program - NS Notify.exe
can be disabled, unless you are on a Net and want to check mail
when NetScape is not running. Remove the NSNotify shortcut from the
START UP menu. To enable the Internal mail checker...

EDIT menu|PREFERENCES|MAIL & GROUPS|MAIL SERVER|EDIT.
Checkmark the two upper boxes and type in a time interval for checking.
10 minutes would be good. (mark's note: i like every one minute <g>)

If you want a sound when mail arrives checkmark the 'enable mail sounds'
box under MAIL & NEWS (GROUPS). Click on OK to exit the dialogue boxes.
The mail sound is set in Control Panel. Click the SOUNDS icon and choose
'New Mail Notification'."

*******************************

there is also this preference setting for you to examine...

*******************************

"Close NetScape completely.

Open PREFS.JS with Notepad or right-click it and choose EDIT.

Add (anywhere) or modify this line...

user_pref("mail.auth_login", false);

FILE|SAVE"

**********************************

i assume that you are comfortable editing this file. if not, or if unsure, please do not proceed. <g>

maybe this added info will help. i hope so

:)
