mr mark, it isn't just Netscape. IE also sometimes pops a dialup box [different from the regular one] asking for ID and PW while the computer is still online. Clicking 'cancel' gets rid of it. This seems to happen when MSN 'e-mail notification is unavailable'. I think it's due to miscommunication with the e-mail server and I live with it. When I used to follow news groups this was a common complaint.

Hi mr mark and all,

I just bought a PC at an auction for a busted company. The PC has Windows 2000 Pro installed and seems to boot fine except it wants a login and password.

The company that auctioned it has sold as is and where is and will not help. The bankrupt company has vanished so no help there. I don't care about the previous owners files but of course, would like to keep the WIn2k install.

I need to put my own login and password on this PC to preserve the install as far as I can see.

Any ideas would be appreciated.DS

Thanks, mark. I get lost with procedures as complex as the ones you've outlined. I had hoped that by deleting all traces of Communicator first and then downloading a clean copy, that I'd get the same result. Does that seem unduly simplistic or is there anything else about that technique that wouldn't accomplish the same result? I wonder if Netscape 6 has this bug? I may get inspired to contact Netscape about this one. Having my computer lock up during trading is not cool, but not getting my email all day is not cool either. Well, I'll take a look at your suggestions as well as my own.

Since I'm posting I want to share my delight with my new Logitech optical mouse. This is the blue one with the blue lighted logo on the back and four buttons. The optical versus rolling ball has really made life simpler for me. No more stopping to clean the rollers every day. And the optical mouse has a smoother more discrete action for working on charts. Big improvement for only fifty bucks.

best,

Rick
