I suspect the slavery issue before the Civil War was like this: An issue that most people have an opinion on and that seemingly allows no compromise. We've made it through about thirty years without too much violence, but that could change in a flash. Hopefully this will never reach the point where it explodes- -but it could.

Where there is great moral ambiguity it is best to let people turn to
their own consciences.

Hmmmm.

Middle East seems to have a lot of moral ambiguity.

Not sure I want

Lots of moral ambiguity about the death penalty, or whether a man has a right to kill a person who rapes and murders their wife, or lots of things.

Not sure I want to let people just turn to their consciences without imposing some rule of law..
